Western Alaska Range Hunts

If any part of Alaska was created as a home for a multitude of wildlife species, it is the western Alaska Range.  The Alaska that we envision as majestic glacier capped mountains (Denali--The Great One); timber clad valleys, tranquil and silent, that lead out to the seemingly never-ending tundra covered foothills.  This is the heartland of Alaska.  Home of the largest moose on earth, vast herds of caribou, bands of Dall's sheep, grizzly, black bear, wolf and wolverine.

This part of Alaska has been our home every fall since 1983.  We have helped to make the dreams of many sportsmen become reality from this camp, know only as Emerald Valley.  Again, if experience has taught us anything about being proper stewards of wildlife and clients alike, it has taught us that fewer clients and longer multiple species hunts make the best combination.

Access to Emerald Valley is via bush plane from McGrath, Alaska.  McGrath is located on the Kuskokwim River about 200 miles west of Anchorage in the heart of Interior Alaska.  Our camp here is intentionally kept and maintained with the aesthetics of "days gone by." Permanent wall tents with wood floors and sidewalls, wood heaters, comfortable beds, and a shower facility.  Food is country or family style and there is lots of it.  Several less permanent but still comfortable outlying camps are accessed via ATV's.  These ATV's also serve us well as meat, trophy, and supply transportation and access to hunting grounds.

Hunting here is conducted "safari" style.  During September when all seven species of big game are in season, you may very well see all of them on several of your hunting days.  I hope you can become one of the many friends we have made from this wonderful place.

Prince William Sound Hunts

The deep majestic fjords, tall glacial capped mountains, coastal rain forests and the abundant wildlife of Prince William Sound makes you sit up and take notice of how special creation really is.

Brown bear, black bear, and Rocky Mountain goat hunts are conducted in scenic Prince William Sound by Private Land Use Authorization as well as US Forest Service Special Use Permit.  This is one of the most picturesque settings in the world.  Base camp facilities are one of several vessels or a floating house depending on the location of your hunt.   Alaskan Mountain Safaris averages over thirty percent return clientele.

Nearly every hunter we have hosted here after they have already hunted the Wrangells or western Alaska Range have had the same thing to say--"you've saved the best for last!"  After guiding brown bear hunters for over ten seasons on the Alaska Peninsula I can honestly say that I never experienced any hunts that offered the numbers of bears per square mile that we have on our private lands here in Prince William Sound.  Often times you can find yourself within a few hundred yards of multitudes of brown bears in thick cover.  This is as exciting of a hunt as you can find anywhere.  Goat hunting here is fantastic.  The numbers of goats are high but you have to be in good physical condition.

Hunting for brown and black bears occurs at elevations ranging from sea level to 3,000 feet.  Mountain goat hunting varies from 1,000 feet to 4,000 feet.  This area blends abundant land and sea mammals, bird life and breathtaking scenery into a Photographer's paradise, so be sure to bring plenty of film.  During the October, November and December hunts, you can take advantage of the abundant waterfowl hunting opportunities when time allows.

As time allows, we commonly ask you to help supplement our table fare with what you can catch from the ocean.  Usual dinner fare includes halibut, red snapper/yellow eye, and lingcod.

Alaskan Mountain Safaris has had the good fortune to have nearly a 100% success ratio on our brown bear hunts in this area.  Our average harvested bear will square around 8-1/2 feet.  There are 10-feet plus bears here and you will be right in the middle of them on this hunt!
